Satellite Mapping for Property Tax Recovery

Satellite Mapping for Property Tax Recovery

According to recent news by ToI, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) property department may levy property taxes which will also account for the alterations done from this year.

The department has decided to map properties through Geographic Information System (GIS) in the new financial year to increase tax recovery.

Faced with the task of recovering Rs 590 crore tax, officials are on the lookout for newer ways to collect the dues. One such way would be to link all properties within civic jurisdiction through satellite.

“Technology will come handy in maximizing the recovery process. Currently, officials are required to make door-to- door visits to survey and verify the properties in the city. GIS will simplify the process and it should be implemented in six months’ time,” said the assessor and collector, property department P B Kulkarni.

The decision to map properties is also based on the recent findings of large-scale alterations being done to them.

The department had formed a team to identify properties which had made such alterations to meet the 2015-16 target of Rs 516 crore.

“The survey threw up around 40,000-odd properties paying taxes that were not consistent to the areas occupied. The special drive enabled us to recover dues upto Rs 30 crore. More such properties can be located through GIS and enable us to recover more,” said an official from the property department.
