Ph.D. Position in “Co-location of Space Geodetic Techniques”

ETH ZurichThe Chair of Mathematical and Physical Geodesy, as part of the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry, has its main research and teaching focus on space geodesy and navigation, especially the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and the space geodetic techniques VLBI and SLR. For the SNF project “Co-location of space geodetic techniques on ground and in space”, a project within the DFG Research Unit “Reference Systems” (FOR 1503) and a collaboration with TU Munich, there is an opening for a Ph.D. Position in “Co-location of space geodetic techniques“.

The project aims at improving existing and establishing new ties between the space techniques both, on ground and in space, and at assessing and reducing the technique-specific biases as an essential prerequisite for the realization of a unique high-precision terrestrial reference frame for the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS). To achieve this goal, the project will make use of the Geodetic Observatory Wettzell (3 VLBI and 2 SLR telescopes, >5 GNSS receivers, terrestrial local tie measurements over three decades) as a laboratory that is unique worldwide to study local ties, systematic intra- and inter-technique biases, and local environmental effects.

The successful applicant will join our research group and the DFG Research Unit consisting of about ten Ph.D. students and postdocs, allowing for a vivid exchange of ideas and collaborations. The highly motivated candidate should have basic knowledge in space geodesy (GNSS, VLBI and SLR), programming skills, the ability to creatively solve problems, and a Master of Science in geodesy, physics, informatics or a neighboring field. Knowledge about the Bernese GNSS Software is welcome but not requested.

For further information please contact Prof. Markus Rothacher (markus.rothacher@ethz.ch); no application documents) or visit our website http://www.mpg.igp.ethz.ch.

We are looking forward to receive your online application. It should include a comprehensive CV (with publication list), diplomas, work certificates, and contact information of at least two referees. All documents (pdf is recommended) should be uploaded to ETH Zurich, Mrs. Corina Niescher, Human Resources, CH-8092 Zürich.
