Dehradun: Underlining the importance of using Geographic Information System and Global Positioning System in the state’s remote hill areas, Chief Minister Harish Rawat has said maximum use of these technologies prior to 2013 flash floods would have helped deal with their catastrophic effects in an effective way.

The Chief Minister made this point while addressing a state-level meet here yesterday on promoting space technology-based tools and applications in governance and development,

He said GIS and GPS technologies should be used to the maximum in remote hills areas of the state which have an uneven terrain.

Asking all departments to come forward and ensure maximum use of these technologies, Rawat said Uttarakhand Science Education and Research Centre can also be roped in to train their employees and make them well-versed in their usage.
